a mere omnipotent genie

Ken Miller’s answer to Why won't God heal amputees?:

Suppose that it was common knowledge that if you were a righteous person and of great faith and prayed deeply, all of a sudden, your limb would grow back. That would reduce God to a kind of supranatural force… and by pushing the button labeled ‘prayer,’ you could accomplish anything you wanted.

So in other words, suppose everyone knew Jesus spake truly in the Gospels:

Truly I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, Be taken up and cast into the sea, and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says is going to happen, it will be granted him. Therefore I say to you, all things for which you pray and ask, believe that you have received them, and they will be granted you. (‘Mark’ 11:23-24)

But if Jesus were correct and God actually granted everything you prayed for, why that would reduce the Almighty to a mere omniponent genie!

♫ If your heart is in your dream
No request is too extreme
When you wish upon a god
Your dreaaaams cooooome truuuuuue...*

  • Altered lyrics from “When You Wish Upon a Star”, sung by the character Jiminy Cricket in Pinocchio (), a classic animated film where a fairy grants a childless woodcarver’s wish that a wooden puppet he crafted could be a real boy.
